Overview
Stephen Cunningham focuses his practice on professional liability coverage and general liability defense. He is a seasoned trial attorney who has represented defendants throughout New York’s state and federal courts including many jury trials, and has been admitted Pro Hac Vice for cases in New Jersey and Rhode Island. He has successfully handled appellate cases in all four of New York’s Appellate Divisions, the New York Court of Appeals and the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
His work in his professional liability practice, in particular in defending insurance agents and brokers, has spanned more than 30 years. He also assists agencies and brokerages on all legal aspects of their businesses including the drafting of producer agreements, reviewing and revising agency contracts, and litigating contract disputes involving producers and insurance carriers. Mr. Cunningham’s general liability defense work includes defending clients with regard to claims concerning New York Labor Law 240 and 241, and in property and premises liability matters.
After 16 years of a successful practice with Keidel & Cunningham, LLP, he joined Kaufman Dolowich LLP in 2024 to better serve the needs of the business and insurance industries. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cunningham worked as an associate trial attorney with a New York City firm, specializing in railroad (FELA) and environmental coverage litigation. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County, New York.
In addition to his client service, Mr. Cunningham was a continuing education instructor for the New York State Insurance Department.
