Overview
Matthew J. Pallay focuses his defense practice on transportation, admiralty and maritime law, and general liability, including personal injury and marine casualty litigation in state, federal, and administrative courts.
He defends clients in a range of litigation including vessel owners, Protection and Indemnity (P&I) clubs, marine terminals, and stevedoring companies. Mr. Pallay provides critical counsel to international and domestic ocean carriers, tug and barge lines, domestic terminals, and longshore employers in nearly all aspects of maritime and longshore matters, as well as for Defense Base Act carriers and employers, and landlords and product manufacturers.
In Mr. Pallay’s general liability work, he handles cases involving domestic casualty and property damage investigations; seaman’s personal injury claims, cargo damage, loss, and theft matters; Jones Act cases; longshore matters involving U.S. terminals, landlords, and shipping lines. Mr. Pallay likewise represents property owners in various personal injury matters securing summary judgment in numerous matters, as well as litigating cases through trial and appellate courts.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Pallay developed ten years of industry experiences as a third-generation longshoreman in the Ports of New York and New Jersey. As a longshoreman, he primarily handled various bulk and breakbulk (non container) cargo operations, as well as heavy lifts. Additionally, he handled vessel mooring, stowage, and discharge operations, and later, labor relations between local longshore employers and stevedores.
