The proposed rule is likely to increase labor costs substantially for many employers, especially in the education, retail and food service industries, according to Jason Rossiter, an attorney with Kaufman Dolowich in Dallas. It “may cause some employers to give salary bumps to some workers who are currently making just under $55,000 a year today to make sure those workers keep their exempt status,” he said.
