A CMS warning on a “fax phishing” scam reminds you that the noisy little machines are still very much a part of health care and you should train staff to check out the provenance of sensitive faxes as they would sensitive emails.

 Avery A. Dial, chair of the Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice Group at Kaufman Dolowich LLP in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., agrees: “First off, any fax ‘from Medicare’ should raise a red flag for you.”

You might be tempted to call the number on the suspicious fax but, Dial says, “I would hesitate” because “that might just bring you to a call center that the scammers have set up.” If you have good reason to suspect fraud, report it as CMS suggests.
