The California court system is broken. This message was delivered by several speakers at the July 25 State Bar of California’s Labor and Employment Law Section’s Wage and Hour Conference. The California court system has experienced budget cuts for many years: furlough days, less bailiffs in courtrooms, longer lines at filing windows. But the courts have recently made even more severe budget cuts — cuts to services that not only affect court employees and litigants, but also the public at large. The Los Angeles County Superior Court has already cut court reporters for civil trials, and Alameda, San Francisco and other counties have made similar cuts to court services. None of California’s 57 counties will escape reductions, and each court has been charged with determining how they will react to the reduction in their budget.
